Themes: Cars (and how to shoot them) Part 2

Interceptor

As part of my retrospective look at the photographic themes I have shot as a process I am doing to try to figure out in my head what I like shooting these days I last week posted part one of this pair of posts about cars;  here.

Part Two is about stationary cars or cars on display;

Having been an owner of a few classic cars in my time I have spent many a Sunday afternoon walking about fields looking at shiny cars. I was never big on the whole polishing and detailing thing (I’d rather drive) but I do appreciate that a polished car makes a nice photograph. I will focus here on mostly  classic cars but these thoughts apply equally to modern cars. Continue reading “Themes: Cars (and how to shoot them) Part 2”

Themes: Cars (and how to shoot them) Part 1

As I look back through my archive at my common themes I find a lot of images of cars.  Cars in fields, in streets, racing, in pieces, close-up etc etc.

I have mentioned before I have an liking for cars you can read about my history with them and my thinking somewhat here so I won’t go into it again.  I think my love affair  with cars is, for now, well let’s just say we are taking a break.

Instead then (rather than repeating myself) for this post, I thought maybe I should talk about how I take pictures of cars rather than the why and whatnot.

Let’s break this up into two categories; racing cars and concourse/display. Continue reading “Themes: Cars (and how to shoot them) Part 1”

Ecurie Ecosse

A quick jump back in time with a short article on an event I took part in a few years ago.

I was lucky enough to be invited by a car group I knew to take a scenic drive to raise money for a local charity with my 1972 Jensen Interceptor and visit the Ecurie Ecosse collection which was then owned by Dick Skipworth.

If you are not familiar with Ecurie Ecosse they were a privately run Scottish racing team back in the ’50s and ’60s and the name is still used today (you can read about them here).

We met at the organizer’s beautiful house in Britwell Salome and parked on his lawn until we were ready to go Continue reading “Ecurie Ecosse”

Le Mans Classic

You may be aware of the Le Mans 24 hour race which is held at the La Sarthe circuit near Le Mans in France which is held every year and is a real test of motoring endurance.  Every two years however they also hold Le Mans Classic which brings back cars from every era over the last 95 or so years. Continue reading “Le Mans Classic”

As this was plural, here is a selection of appropriate shots. Continue reading “PoF: Wheels”

Daily Photo Challenge #13 – Moment & Motion

Well I haven’t had a moment to capture motion so I’m afraid i am going to use the “here’s one I made earlier” cheat

I took this picture a couple of years ago at the Goodwood revival.  If you are not aware of it it is a motor racing event in the UK which is themed around the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s.  This means that all the cars are vintage racing cars which usually have a historical pedigree.  As well as the cars the whole event is vintage based with event goers dressed in vintage clothes.  It’s a really good event to go to if you have the opportunity I would highly recommended.

I will add that unlike many other vintage car events despite these cars being worth thousands (and in some cases Millions) of pounds they are still driven as real racing with all the risks associated.  Fashion is heavy on the agenda so this is not just an event for car and racing lovers.
