Cameras: Ricoh 35 ZF

This camera is similar in operation to the Vitessa 500 in that it is a compact, zone focus viewfinder camera although this allows for full manual control of shutter speed and aperture or the semi-automatic  aperture priority .

It’s slightly more compact and simple look and it doesn’t have any exposure compensation also the batteries are more easily obtained. Continue reading “Cameras: Ricoh 35 ZF”

Cameras: Voigtlander Brillant

I have mentioned this camera before but wanted to add more detail (and add better pictures). The Brillant was first sold in around 1932; early models used a simple zone style focussing method (as opposed to actual distance) with the operator selecting portrait, landscape etc.

This is a later version from around 1937 as it is made from bakelite rather than metal Continue reading “Cameras: Voigtlander Brillant”

Cameras: Voigtlander Bessamatic CS with Zoomar lens

Getting this camera was a little painful, I’ve written about that already here

This Voigtlander bessamatic is an early SLR with interchangeable lenses which of course is now the norm.  Back then I guess things were still being worked out and there is a noticeable difference between the functionality of this camera to how more modern SLRs work.

Voigtlander Bessamatic

This is not a review more a tale of disappointment.

Recently I spotted an interesting potential addition to my collection on the auction site and decided to bid.  The auction was for a Voigtlander Bessamatic which came with the very rare Zoomar lens.  The Zoomar lens was the first zoom lens ever for 35mm cameras and was invented by Voigtlander.   Continue reading “Voigtlander Bessamatic”

Camera: Voigtlander Vitessa 500 SE electronic

I recently picked up a Voigtlander (Zeiss Ikon) Vitessa 500 SE Electronic; what a great little camera!

I receiving it the first issue was batteries as it needed two PX825 (1.55v) batteries which are no longer available. Continue reading “Camera: Voigtlander Vitessa 500 SE electronic”

6 months of going mirrorless with the Olympus Pen-F

It’s been just over six months since I got rid of my dSLR and went mirrorless with the Olympus Pen-F so I figured it was time to review.

My main reason for changing was the bulk and weight of the Canon (with the Sigma lens) I had which, due in part to how I carried the camera, was actually causing physical pain – even when I wasn’t holding it.  It seemed to me that mirrorless Continue reading “6 months of going mirrorless with the Olympus Pen-F”

Cameras: Pentacon FM and Yashica Auto Yashinon DS 50mm f1.9 lens

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I bought this camera because as I previously mentioned here  I bought an M42 lens in an impulsive moment and needed a body to put it on.  After browsing for a suitable candidate I spotted this which was well under $30.  The seller said there was something wrong with the shutter (a crease in the curtain) but in another moment of impulsiveness I bought it anyway. Missed opportunity?

I stopped at an estate sale at the weekend and picked up some furniture and just as I was leaving I saw a case on a table with an Olympus Stylus 35mm compact camera inside.  It had a $30 price tag on it and also had 8 films with it.

I asked about it and they said they would take $25.

I was very tempted but Continue reading “Missed opportunity?”

35mm Film Shootist

Hi I'm Martin Smith, a amateur photographer that likes to shoot solely film. I use black & white with the odd colour image thrown in and mainly use a Leica M4-2 with Summicron 35mm and 50mm lenses. I tend to shoot anything I like, objects, scenes, landscape or street life.
